The last post was sort of devoted to “mama and lily” so it is only fitting to highlight the other side and that is “daddy and lily”. Truly there has never been a sweeter pair. I have seen many dads – good dads, involved dads, loving dads. . . but never have I seen another dad like Brian Savage. He is just natural and was from day one.
Now, I absolutely loathe craft projects (can we say tedious and boring), but that is what you are supposed to do with preschoolers right? Well, I dutifully have come up with projects for Lily (just as I dutifully scrapbook and such) but Brian always takes things to a new level – and enjoys it. Their projects can be simple (you should see what the man can do with a sheet) or elaborate (see below). What I love most about watching these times is what a true team they are – really working together. Brian instructing and guiding her, but also allowing his ideas or goals to be altered by her input and suggestion. I am always so focused on the goal or outcome but he revels in the process and I see how that nourishes Lily.
Below is the most recent example of their collaboration – a “boat”. The body is taped out on the floor. The sail is anchored with the shoe basket and maneuvered with Brian’s shoelace. They cut out waves and fish from construction paper. Finally, Brian felt that they were finished. . . but Lily had one more idea. ”We need on more thing in the water,” she said. ”What is that?” Brian asked. Lily replied, “A Texas whale!” Where she came up with this, we don’t know but let’s just say it is evidence that her Daddy’s Texas pride has seeped into her consciousness – they are definitely peas in pod!
