Lily usually plays it safe. She is the kid that you can leave unattended, shower, whatever and she quietly plays something pretty angelic. Recently, though, she is stepping out a bit and testing her independence more and I am pretty proud of her. In the last two days, there have been two really funny incidents that are sort of examples of this new growth.
Yesterday, she had been playing quietly up in her room for awhile. I was downstairs and don’t remember what I was doing. Trevor went upstairs to get something from his room, passes the bathroom and starts laughing hysterically. He comes right back downstairs and tells me to take a look. So, I go up there and at first I have no idea WHAT has happened. There is water EVERYWHERE. A sink that is filled (not too high and properly stoppered), a big puddle on her stool with a clump of wet toilet paper on it, water on the floor and it seems that her pants are also wet and lying on the ground. Lily is sitting on the floor with her pants and underwear off and her foot hiked up. She has worked her foot into a nice lather with the softsoap from the counter. First, I just laugh a lot. Then, I ask her to tell me the story of how she ended up in a puddle of water with one soapy foot.
She says that she had to go to the bathroom. She moved her stool to the toilet and stood on it while she tried to get her pants down. Apparently she had some trouble getting them down quick enough because she started to pee a bit before she sat on the potty. She got pee on her pants and the stool and her foot. Instead of calling me to come fix the situation, which she would have done in the past, she decides to be a big girl and clean up. First, she tackles the stool. She decides to fill up the sink with soapy water so that she can dump some on the stool to wash it. Then, she tries to dry it with toilet paper. Her pants get some treatment next, but what she is most concerned about is her foot. She has peed on her own foot and is totally grossed out by this. She pulls the softsoap down and begins to wash the urine (very very well) from her foot. The picture really does NOT do the situation justice. There was a better shot but it exposed her too much.

Scenario #2 – This morning she, again, was very quiet so I went to check on her. When I opened her door there she was all dressed up with makeup on – or rather lipstick on her lips, cheeks, nose and eyebrows. You might think this is very normal for someone her age and I would agree. My mom got her this little caboodle for Christmas with real makeup for her to play with, but up until this point she has always very meticulously put the eye shadow on her eyelids (and quite well), blush on her cheeks and lipstick on her lips. I think this morning was a little experiment. Which speaking of makeup – Lily had a friend over yesterday and I went upstairs to find her friend sitting in the baby doll stroller while Lily was gently applying eye shadow to her eyes. . .man, that was cute!
