Stepping Out

Lily usually plays it safe.  She is the kid that you can leave unattended, shower, whatever and she quietly plays something pretty angelic.  Recently, though, she is stepping out a bit and testing her independence more and I am pretty proud of her.  In the last two days, there have been two really funny incidents that are sort of examples of this new growth.

Yesterday, she had been playing quietly up in her room for awhile.  I was downstairs and don’t remember what I was doing.  Trevor went upstairs to get something from his room, passes the bathroom and starts laughing hysterically.  He comes right back downstairs and tells me to take a look.  So, I go up there and at first I have no idea WHAT has happened.  There is water EVERYWHERE.  A sink that is filled (not too high and properly stoppered), a big puddle on her stool with a clump of wet toilet paper on it, water on the floor and it seems that her pants are also wet and lying on the ground.  Lily is sitting on the floor with her pants and underwear off and her foot hiked up.  She has worked her foot into a nice lather with the softsoap from the counter.  First, I just laugh a lot.  Then, I ask her to tell me the story of how she ended up in a puddle of water with one soapy foot.

She says that she had to go to the bathroom.  She moved her stool to the toilet and stood on it while she tried to get her pants down.  Apparently she had some trouble getting them down quick enough because she started to pee a bit before she sat on the potty.  She got pee on her pants and the stool and her foot.  Instead of calling me to come fix the situation, which she would have done in the past, she decides to be a big girl and clean up.  First, she tackles the stool.  She decides to fill up the sink with soapy water so that she can dump some on the stool to wash it.  Then, she tries to dry it with toilet paper.  Her pants get some treatment next, but what she is most concerned about is her foot.  She has peed on her own foot and is totally grossed out by this.  She pulls the softsoap down and begins to wash the urine (very very well) from her foot.  The picture really does NOT do the situation justice.  There was a better shot but it exposed her too much.

Scenario #2 – This morning she, again, was very quiet so I went to check on her.  When I opened her door there she was all dressed up with makeup on – or rather lipstick on her lips, cheeks, nose and eyebrows.  You might think this is very normal for someone her age and I would agree.  My mom got her this little caboodle for Christmas with real makeup for her to play with, but up until this point she has always very meticulously put the eye shadow on her eyelids (and quite well), blush on her cheeks and lipstick on her lips.  I think this morning was a little experiment.  Which speaking of makeup – Lily had a friend over yesterday and I went upstairs to find her friend sitting in the baby doll stroller while Lily was gently applying eye shadow to her eyes. . .man, that was cute!

You win some. . .You lose some

I realized the other day that I have officially lost one “fight” with my daughter – over chocolate.  We have restricted her so much in her short little life in hopes that she would not become soooooooooo fondly attached as her mom.  She had pretty much nothing for 2 years (except birthday cake) and then after that instead of a whole “serving” she would be allowed a few bites.  It really seems not to have mattered.  She is as devoted as ever to getting chocolate – whether it is begging me or getting it on the sly.  The other day I accidentally fell back to sleep and woke up only about 30 minutes later to Lily blowing her breath in my face.  Why was she doing this odd thing?- So that I could smell the heavy scent of M&Ms.  Of course, I had been carefully rationing out our Valentines candy and then putting it away.  She never threw a fit over this, but accepted it as the way it should be.  The minute, though, that no one was watching she found those M&Ms and enjoyed them  - completely unrationed.  I really had a good laugh over it.  I can’t remember how she told me the story about it, but it was VERY funny!

Wednesday night we made chocolate cookies for the church group coming over – take a look at her below.  I could barely get her off my leg.  She didn’t even want to stir this time because she knew it would take her longer than me.  She kept rushing me to finish making the cookies so she could lick the bowl – hmmmmmmm – good thing mommy has won some other more important battles.

I was tagged a few days ago on Lee’s blog to post the fourth picture in my fourth folder and explain it.  Well, I knew before I even looked that it would be a baby picture of Lily because that is pretty much all of our pictures especially in the first few folders.  Really, when she was born I think our favorite pastime was just staring at her and taking pictures of her.  I am pretty sure the second one won’t get that treatment – maybe for the best.  The picture below was taken by Brian as he was experimenting with our new camera (at the time) and its functions (the sepia function here).  I am looking forward to some new baby cheeks in the house soon since Lily has long since lost hers.

Valentine wuz here

No one told me that Valentines is the new Christmas – but, wow, did Lily hit the jackpot today.  Not only did she get sizeable packages from both grandmothers, but also Brian and I gave her things we had picked out individually.  So, she is stickered up, sugared up, fairied up and ready to go. . . but not to bed for sure!

Brian kicked off the day for us with, what has become his ritual of, (perfectly) heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast.  I wish I would have taken a picture of them – they really were beautiful, but I was too busy fending off a hormone headache by scarfing down my breakfast!  I made some jambalaya for dinner and then dipped strawberries in chocolate for dessert.  By the end of dinner, I looked over at Brian and laughed.  He was covered in stickers and I thought it was a good summation of the day.

Yikes!!!!!!!

Of course we are very happy that we are expecting baby #2. . . .but I must say that I have barely adjusted to the reality of it when. . . well, see below.  The first picture I took of myself pregnant with Lily was 20 weeks and I was totally sticking it out for the picture.  This time I am more inspired to document the growth a bit earlier – maybe it is because you can already see something.  YIKES!!  I am going to be a house!

The differences, so far, between the pregnancies (besides me growing rapidly):

Lily                                        Baby #2

1. carefree                             nothing but stress

2.  sick                                  sick as a DOG, throwing up and barely functioning

3. big, square head              definitely a round, normal-sized  head (comparing both early ultrasounds) LOL!

Wintertime Fun – Part II

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We were finally able to enjoy the one redeeming aspect of winter – SNOW!  It was only about 4 or 5 inches I, think, but Lily had a great time suiting up and tromping around.  We don’t have a yard of any kind but all the kids just take their play to the streets.  Lily was squealing with delight!!!

Wintertime fun – Part I

Somebody give me an “amen” if you are feeling that this winter is dragging at a snail’s pace.  Overall, we have been pretty cooped up and Lily and I have been trying to stay busy.  Today, we pulled out an old faithful – making play dough.

First we mixed the dry and wet ingredients separately then “cooked” them together.  Lily chose to color this batch yellow. . .at first. . . then she added a bit of red at the end.

Then we let the now orange dough cool.

Once it cooled it was time for the kneading – fun!

How cute!

I am sucker for girl things and I LOVE having a little girl – but sometimes bows and such can be a bit over the top for me (and too big!).  These cute little barrettes, though, take the cake for sweet but not overdone.  They are mainly wool felt made by a mom and sold on etsy.  Check them out.  She has a variety of cute colors and styles.  How many times have I said the word cute in this post?
